What is it?
MRSA, or Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, is a bacterium that causes "staph" infections in various parts of the body. MRSA can be difficult to treat, due to its resistance to common antibiotic treatment. It is most commonly found in healthcare settings. MRSA is most prevalent in patients recovering from invasive procedures or with weakened immune systems. In these patients, MRSA can cause serious, possibly life threatening infections such as bloodstream infections, or lung infections. MRSA can also infect otherwise healthy people. In these people it may present as painful pimples or boils that drain pus. These infections are usually mild.

How is it spread?
MRSA is spread through contact. You may contract it by touching someone infected or by touching a surface that the bacteria are on. Approximately 1% of the population carries MRSA, though many are not infected.

How do I protect myself and others?
Because MRSA is spread through contact, hand washing is essential. Wash your hands frequently. Establish a hand washing policy for employees. Clean and disinfect any surfaces that regularly come into contact with the bare skin of more than one person (doorknobs, toilets, desks, etc) often.
